Job Title: Animal Health Technician
Department: Animal Health
Classification: Part-time, non-exempt
Job Relationship: Reports to the Animal Health Manager and Animal Health Co-Manager. Works closely with volunteers and other staff members.
Beginning Wage: $12.75/hr. - Raise after 90-day probation
Hours per week: 28 to 35 hours
Schedule: Sunday through Saturday, 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. (Two days off per week), plus two to three evenings per week from 5:00 or 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 or 7:30 p.m.
Purrks (Benefits): One week PTO after 90-day probation, two weeks PTO after one year, At-Cost Veterinary Care for Personal Pets, Retirement Plan after one year, and many sandpaper kisses and wagging tails.
Position Summary: Responsible for administering medications and vaccines, monitoring animal health and behavior, assisting with examinations and treatments, maintaining medical records and ensuring animals receive compassionate care in a safe and sanitary environment.
Essential Job Functions:
Provides optimal standard of care to all animals under the care of the Fayette Regional Humane Society
- Perform intake assessments, routine health checks, and daily evaluations
- Identify signs of illness, injury, or disease; isolate animals as needed
- Administer medication to animals as directed and/or approved by the Veterinary Technician or a Veterinarian
- Performs in-house lab testing
- Offers supportive care for common conditions such as wounds, parasites, and respiratory issues
- Assists during surgical procedures and provides post-operative care and recovery monitoring
- Safely restrains and handles animals of varying sizes and temperaments
- Feeds and supports cleaning and enrichment while following disease control protocols
- Assists with or performs humane euthanasia when necessary, with compassion and adherence to protocols
- Accurately updates animal records, including stage and location, in the shelter management program
- Tracks supplies and communicates with the clinic when ordering needs arise
- Keeps supervisor informed of animal behavior, health, or other concerns
- Follows all safety guidelines to ensure a safe work environment for staff and a safe living environment for animals
- Takes immediate action to address any safety concern or noncompliance of safety rules that could put an employee, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk
Provides professional client and volunteer care
- Represents the Fayette Regional Humane Society in a professional and courteous manner at all times. Provides quality service to clients, volunteers, and staff, recognizing their individual contributions to the success of our organization
- Promotes integration and utilization of volunteers
- Actively promotes the Fayette Regional Humane Society programs and events to clients and volunteers
- Refers clients to appropriate staff for service
Performs other duties as assigned, including but not limited to:
- Performs other duties and special projects as assigned
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Able to read and understand instructions
- Able to work with animals, disinfectants, and cleaning supplies
- Able to lift/carry up to 50 lbs.; stand/walk for long periods; bend, kneel, restrain animals; exposure to noise, allergens, chemicals, and potential bites/scratches
Knowledge and Skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a variety of people
- Ability to work with a computer and operational software
- Knowledge of animal breeds, behavior, and handling
- Knowledge of animal health, able to identify illness preferred
- Ability to safely handle animals, including those with health and behavioral challenges
- Excellent communication skills and ability to follow instructions
- Detail oriented and able to prioritize and perform duties efficiently and effectively

Working Conditions
This position involves frequent interaction with animals that may be sick, injured, frightened, aggressive or neglected. Employees may be exposed to emotionally difficult situations, including animal illness, injury, euthanasia, cruelty investigations, abandonment, and other circumstances that may cause emotional stress or compassion fatigue. Work may involve exposure to animal waste, odors, cleaning chemicals, disinfectants, allergens, zoonotic diseases, loud noises, and varying indoor and outdoor environmental conditions. Physical demands may include standing, walking, bending, kneeling, lifting, carrying, restraining, and handling animals of various sizes and temperaments. Employees may need to operate computer or office equipment. Employees must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and exercise sound judgment while maintaining professionalism and humane treatment standards. Work schedules may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency response situations as required by operational needs. The facility operates seven days a week.
